Although printing works were not included in the current listed activities of the Air Quality Act that came into effect on 1 April - thanks to the joint submission made by the Printing Industries Federation of SA (PIFSA), the Packaging Council of SA and the Plastic Converters Assoc in 2009 - the Air Quality technical advisor at the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) has confirmed that it will be included in future rounds and amendments.
The submission pointed out that from a procedural perspective,
insufficient engagement with the printing industry had taken place and
from a technical perspective, certain issues regarding different
processes, definitions, clarity regarding reporting measurements and
criteria consumption, costs to companies, and volatile organic compound
emission reduction methods, needed to be addressed.
The DEA and the SA Bureau of Standards (SABS) have subsequently
committed to consulting and engaging with the relevant industry
representatives.
Industry players who wish to participate as members of a working group
tackling the issue and advising the DEA on various strategies (because,
PIFSA says, this is not a one-size fits all solution) should contact
Louise Moralee at PIFSA.
