According to Consol Glass, the average weight of a 750ml non-returnable glass wine bottle was 516g until 2006. This was reduced by 15% last year to 437g, and now by a further 87g to 350g for this season's harvest.
"The 350g lightweight bottle design was evolved by Distell's packaging
development manager, Eugene Mostert, in co-operation with Consol Glass,
and is available to the entire local industry," says Distell
environmental manager, Jacques Rossouw.
Su Birch, CEO of Wines of SA, says: "The new 350g bottles for red and
white wines have been designed to accommodate screwcap closures, which
account for over 65% of SA's wine production. At the same time, the
average weight of bottles sealed with corks has been reduced from 570g
to 460g."
According to Carina Gous, who heads Distell's wine marketing division,
the 350g bottle will be used for selected company brands as well as for
some international buyers-own-brands produced by Distell.
"Internationally, we are finding that trade and consumers are
encouraged by tangible, demonstrable efforts to promote sustainable
production. The fact that Nederburg and Two Oceans are showing such
sound increases in sales volumes in countries like Britain, Germany,
the Netherlands, Canada and the US, can be attributed in part to the
favourable response to our communication about our eco-friendly
initiatives," says Gous.
Birch adds that alternative wine packaging, such as the wine pouch
offered by Arniston Bay, is welcomed in many export markets, and that
SA bag-in-box wines are very popular in Scandinavia.
