Afrox started commercial production at its new speciality gases plant, part of its Gases Operations Centre site in Germiston on Gauteng's East Rand, last week.
Robert Carlton-Shields, business manager of Afrox speciality gases,
says: "The plant was commissioned in January and Afrox has invested
more than R100m in the project to make the facility the most modern of
its kind in the southern hemisphere."
Carlton-Shields explains that the new facility was designed by Linde
Engineering and built to world class environmental standards. "Work
processes have been refined and analytical procedures developed to
improve efficiency, contain costs, and increase capacity to support
growth until 2015."
In conjunction with the commissioning of the facility, Afrox has
launched a range of speciality calibration gases and non-reactive gas
mixs called HiQ 60, which were developed internationally by its
parent company, The Linde Group.
Carlton-Shields says that each HiQ 60 gas comes with an extended five
year shelf life and flat-line guarantee, allowing for greater
reliability in the accuracy of instrument measurement and longer term
usability of gas.
"The new production facility will allow us to produce speciality gases,
including argon, carbon dioxide, helium, hydrogen, nitrogen and
synthetic air with shorter lead times - in some cases as little as five
days," he says.
Complementing these gases is a range of HiQ speciality equipment that
includes scientific regulators, gas distribution equipment and
laboratory gas generators. "With the HiQ range, our customers can be
confident that they are using a product that is in line with global
specifications in terms of both quality and safety," says
Carlton-Shields. "This a market-superior total solution backed up by
local and international technical support. It addresses customer needs
in terms of current market trends, technological advancements, new
standards and emerging legislation."
