January 2010 |
The Rooibos industry is stepping up its activities to make the most of opportunities presented by the 2010 FIFA World Cup to promote this uniquely South African herb to the world's media.
Apart from the national promotional campaign underway since 2009, the
SA Rooibos Council is launching its first ever international campaign
in Germany, the second largest market in the world for Rooibos, after
SA.
The Rooibos biodiversity initiative, which is aimed at ensuring
sustainable production practices and biodiversity conservation, is set
to become a major focus area with 2010 also being declared by the
United Nations as International Year of Biodiversity. The council has
received 10 submissions for research projects, of which eight are for
new projects that still need funding. An announcement about
health-related studies is expected early this year.
