Small-scale freshwater fish farming PDF  | Print Article |  Send to a Friend
August 2009
BOOK REVIEW: This booklet, published by the Agromisa Foundation which is linked to Wageningen University in the Netherlands, gives basic information on how to set up small-scale fish farming for subsistence purposes. However it would also be useful for those looking to start commercial production in rural areas.

It goes through the most basic means of constructing different types of ponds, and their maintenance and monitoring; selecting sites and fish species; fish nutrition, health and reproduction; and harvesting and post-harvesting.
For instance it goes through periphyton-based fish farming. Periphyton is the group of algae, bacteria, fungi and other aquatic organisms that attach to substrates. Fish production is higher in ponds provided with substrates such as branches or poles placed vertically across the pond, than in ponds without substrates.
Another useful aspect covered is polyculture - in which more than one fish species is raised in the fish pond. In this way, the various natural food resources in the pond are best utilised, raising total potential fish production above what it would be with only one species. Polyculture has, for instance, been practised to great advantage in China.
